sandy bywater

Member of the Northern Potters' Association

Sandy Bywater is interested in exploiting the translucent properties of porcelain. Specifically the “ white gold “ from China. Inspired by the light, space and patterns of Lincolnshire beaches, she uses designs and motifs that draw parallels between porcelain and nature; both are fragile yet strong, beautiful in their simplicity.

Sandy’s current range of Lamplights developed during two residencies in Jingdezhen, China. Working in the finest of Chinese porcelains, she found the material could be worked when egg shell thin. She began casting cores for her cylindrical designs, producing small batches which were then individually hand finished with detailed relief’s that make each of the Lamplights unique. Some are glazed, which enhance their finesse when unlit. Other Lamplights are glazed, for a clean line and classic beauty, which comes into its own when lit. A separate range is wood fired in an Anagama Kiln that is fired four times a year and takes four days in the kiln. Each of these pieces is unique and distinctive, decorated by the unpredictable glaze of fire and flame.
