I have always been fascinated by the patterns of erosion that natural forces have created. I particularly like the layers that become apparent over time and this together with the developing discolouration and edges interest me.
I have tried to capture the surface qualities of such wear and decay on stone buildings. I have explored new areas of fibre clay and developed innovative techniques to combat the unpredictability of the material during the firing process. I enjoy the ambiguity of seemingly decaying vessels made from delicately thin precious porcelain. The patches and ripped edges add fragility whilst the layers and marks add movement. The simplicity of the forms belies the complexity of the making process.
I make up a porcelain slip and add flax, recycled newsprint and recycled nylon fibres. I divide this slip into a number of containers and to each I add oxides to give both colour and texture. Onto my canvas I swish my coloured porcelain slip, building up layers as I go, similar to painting in watercolours. My work is spontaneous, so capturing freshness. Once complete, I turn my painting into a vessel. I add small panels, glaze and terra sigillata. My work is once fired in an electric kiln to 1280ºC.
