At the time, the artistic quality of the engravings gave them wide spread appeal to patrons of art, architecture and garden design all over Europe, and this appreciation has not diminished. The images feature principal squares in Rome, fountains in the grounds of the villas of the Aldobrandini, Ludovisi and Borghese families at Frascati.
Giovanni Battista Falda was an Italian draftsman and printmaker. He is best known for his architectural views, which introduced an influential realist style into Roman printmaking and helped make Rome a major centre for architectural engravings. From at least 1655, he produced views of buildings, gardens and fountains in Rome, detailed plans of the city and ceremonial events. Many of his works celebrated Pope Alexander VII’s role in the renovation of Rome.
