My work is concerned with notions of hybridity within painting, including ideas relating to technology, abstraction, facture and the function and role of gesture. I use a combination of multi-layered elements and re-mediated imagery and explore formal and optical concepts particularly illusionism and three dimensional modelling. The works have a diversity of sources such as computer graphics, virtual landscapes, microphotography, animation and scientific imagery.

Colours combine natural and synthetic sensations of light, and are techno-impressionist, indexical of the 'screen'. Photographic concerns in painting are being superseded by developments through digitization and new technologies; my practice references concerns around this debate and the impact this has on abstract painting.

For me, the quality of execution and notions of materiality are paramount when considering the surface within a painting. Painterly processes from a contradiction when dissolving the 'gesture', so the organic nature of mark making becomes a neutralised mechanistic procedure. The evidence of production and applications is therefore distanced, but results in a seductive quality in reference again to the 'screen'.

I am currently exploring and developing ideas relating to the micro/macro and of non located space, creating spatial ambiguities. My works combine repetition and geometry forming pictorial abstractions, blurring the boundaries between painting/technology, organic/mechanical, abstraction/figuration and artificiality. I am interested in the emergence of the 'techno' or 'cyber-sublime', (see Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe's Beauty and the Contemporary Sublime) and also aspects of popular culture and diverse cultural references, fusing systems and different information to realise the spatial dynamics within the painting.
