"My curves are not crazy." - Henri Matisse, Jazz, 1947

In  1943, while convalescing from a serious operation, Henri Matisse began work on a set of collages to illustrate an, as yet, untitled and undecided text. This suite of twenty images, translated into "prints" by the stenciling of gouache paint, became known as Jazz and is now considered to be one of his most ambitious and important series of work.
